La Masia has been in operation since 1979 and has graduated numerous footballers into Barcelona’s first team
Some notable homegrown eleven are Victor Valdes, Martin Montoya, Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, Xavi, Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta, Pedro, Lionel Messi and Cesc Fabregas.
Currently none of these players still plays for Barcelona and worries remain as to how the legacy of La Masia, recently marking its 40th year in operation, will carry Barcelona forward when they too have ridden off into the sunset.
There was hope however in the emergence of Ansu Fati, the 17-year-old wonderkid who broke into the first team when Messi and Suarez were injured at the start of 2019/2020, and, to a lesser extent Carles Perez. But Fati couldn’t stand up to the task and is currently plying is plight in England for Brighton.
